Alexander Unruh, known as Alex, was born on May 7, 2003, at Lankenau Medical Center in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. From an early age, his life was marked by a blend of athletic pursuits, academic excellence, and a commitment to community service.

Early Life and Education

Alex grew up in Bryn Mawr, PA, and attended his educational journey at Gladwyne Elementary School. He then moved on to Welsh Valley Middle School. It was during these formative years that his talents in sports began to shine, particularly in baseball and squash.

After Welsh Valley, Alex attended Harriton High School. His time there was distinguished not just by his academic performance but also by his impressive achievements in sports. His prowess in squash was particularly notable, as he achieved a national ranking that set him apart from his peers. His academic and athletic journey then took him to Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, where he spent a significant portion of his high school years before returning to Harriton in March 2022 to complete his education.

In high school, Alex was involved in multiple sports teams and activities. He played varsity basketball and baseball and served as the captain of the squash team. His leadership and sportsmanship were evident, as he was also a key figure in the Ozone Art Club and the head of the spirit committee.

Sports Achievements

From a young age, Alex Unruh demonstrated a remarkable talent for sports. In baseball, he traveled to Cuba in eighth grade, a trip that exposed him to new cultures and broadened his horizons. He achieved a national ranking in squash, showcasing his competitive edge and athletic prowess.

Alex Unruh’s sports journey extended beyond individual achievements. During his first year at Westminster School, he was named All-League in squash, an accolade that underscored his talent and hard work. His participation in various tournaments and leagues cemented his reputation as a dedicated athlete.

Camp Kieve and Wilderness Adventures

Another important chapter in Alex’s early life was his time at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine. The camp focused on outdoor leadership and wilderness adventures, providing him with valuable life skills and memorable experiences. At Camp Kieve, he participated in challenging activities such as hiking Mount Washington and canoeing the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. These experiences nurtured a deep appreciation for nature and adventure, qualities that continue to influence his interests and hobbies today.

Higher Education and Greek Life

Currently, Alexander Unruh is a full-time student at Ohio State University, majoring in Sports Industry and minoring in Political Science. His choice of major reflects his passion for sports and his desire to build a career in this dynamic field. His time at Ohio State has been marked by his involvement in Greek life, specifically with the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He joined as an associate member in the fall of 2023 and became a full member in the spring of 2024. His fraternity involvement includes participation in intramural sports, such as IM basketball, further reflecting his commitment to athletics and community.

Professional and Work Experience

Alex’s first job was at UPS, where he worked in a warehouse. His role involved handling packages and contributing to the logistical operations. After his stint at UPS, he worked as a cashier and server at Zoe’s kitchen. Here, he developed skills in customer service and multitasking by handling phone calls and dine-in orders.

His next role was at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, where he served as an overnight summer camp counselor. Following this role, he began working as a food runner at Savona, a local fine-dining restaurant, in September 2022. This role allowed him to interact with a diverse clientele and further refine his communication skills. His current position is at the Philadelphia Country Club, where he works in the bag room and is occasionally involved in caddying.

Hobbies and Interests

Outside of his professional and academic pursuits, Alex is an avid golfer, skier, and weightlifter. His dedication to golf is evident in his 6.3 handicap, a testament to his time and effort in the sport. Skiing is another passion, with him enjoying the 2022-2023 winter sports at Blue Mountain in the Poconos. Weightlifting rounds out his hobbies and reflects his commitment to physical fitness and personal growth.

Volunteering and Community Service

Alex’s commitment to giving back to his community is a core aspect of his character. He has volunteered with various organizations, including Cradles to Crayons, Narberth Food Bank, and St. Francis Inn. His service has included week-long trips with his church, Church of the Redeemer, to locations such as Florida, North Carolina, and Philadelphia. Through these experiences, he has demonstrated a genuine concern for others and a desire to make a positive impact.
